Gilliam and his co-director Terry Jones worked hard on this film to set the comedy within “a very real, smelly, tactile world.” Gilliam explains: “It was funnier because it was in a real world. We were inspired by Pasolini films because you could smell them, touch them, feel them and I loved that. We wanted to create the same sense of reality. Some of the scenes like the ‘Bring out your dead’ scene work fantastically well. I mean [Michael Palin] is eating mud! Despite the fact it was utterly silly, we were doing it with a straight face and in a world that I believed in on every level.”
